Random Tensor Theory: Extending Random Matrix Theory to Mixtures of Random Product States
2012
We consider a problem in random matrix theory that is inspired by quantum information theory: determining the largest eigenvalue of a sum of p random product states in $${(\mathbb {C}^d)^{\otimes k}}$$ , where k and p/d k are fixed while d → ∞. When k = 1, the Marcenko-Pastur law determines (up to small corrections) not only the largest eigenvalue ( $${(1+\sqrt{p/d^k})^2}$$ ) but the smallest eigenvalue $${(\min(0,1-\sqrt{p/d^k})^2)}$$ and the spectral density in between. We use the method of moments to show that for k > 1 the largest eigenvalue is still approximately $${(1+\sqrt{p/d^k})^2}$$ and the spectral density approaches that of the Marcenko-Pastur law, generalizing the random matrix…
A space-time rainfall generator for highly convective Mediterranean rainstorms
2003
Distributed hydrological models require fine resolution rainfall inputs, enhancing the practical interest of space-time rainfall models, capable of generating through numerical simulation realistic space-time rainfall intensity fields. Among different mathematical approaches, those based on point processes and built upon a convenient analytical description of the raincell as the fundamental unit, have shown to be particularly suitable and well adapted when extreme rainfall events of convective nature are considered. Starting from previous formulations, some analytical refinements have been considered, allowing practical generation of space-time rainfall intensity fields for that type of rai…
Electromagnetic Sensitivity Analysis and Shape Optimization Using Method of Moments and Automatic Differentiation
2009
Sensitivity analysis is an important part of gradient-based optimization of electromagnetic devices. We demonstrate how sensitivity analysis can be incorporated into an existing in-house method of moments solver with a relatively small amount of labor by using a technique called automatic differentiation (AD). This approach enables us to obtain (geometrical) sensitivities of the discrete solution with accuracy up to numerical precision. We compare the assembly time and memory usage of the modified and original solvers. Moreover, we optimize the shape of a dipole antenna and the dimensions of a Yagi-Uda array using the presented AD technique, traditional response level finite difference sens…
Numerical simulation of radiated EMI in 42V electrical automotive architectures
2006
The work is focused on the evaluation of radiated electromagnetic interference generated by dc/dc converters in 42 V systems automotive environment. The results obtained by using the method of moments and the finite difference time domain method, separately, are presented and validated in comparison with those measured in a semi-anechoic electromagnetic chamber. A measurement system set up by the authors is employed. Both the used numerical approaches are proved to be an useful tool for radiated disturbance prediction, and also for electromagnetic compatibility oriented design of the vehicle electrical architecture.
Complementarities in innovation strategy: do intangibles play a role in enhancing firm performance?
2017
This article assesses the role of investments in intangible capital and their potential complementarities as a way to improve firm productivity. We focus on the three intangible resources that, according to the literature, have the greatest strategic importance: research and development (R & D), advertising, and human capital. To test our hypotheses, we use a large sample of Spanish manufacturing firms and consider estimates of total factor productivity through a generalized method of moments approach. Our results show evidence of complementarities between R & D and advertising investments and between advertising and human capital. However, they are not conclusive in the case of R & D and h…
Automatic optimization of multichip RFID tags
2012
The automatic optimization is proposed of the passive RF part of RFID, with special attention to multi-chip tags, and to the novel concept of RFID grids. Performance metrics follows a recent all-comprehensive approach. The proposed approach employs a Genetic Algorithm-based optimization, and an efficient electromagnetic problem parameterization and solution strategy. Resulting structures, while non-intuitive in shape, exhibit enhanced performance.
Testing the Role of Comparative Advantage and Learning in Wage and Promotion Dynamics
2012
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate empirically whether job assignment, based on comparative advantage and learning about workers’ abilities, can explain wage and promotion dynamics within firms.Design/methodology/approachThe Gibbons and Waldman model is estimated in a generalized method of moments (GMM) framework using a unique data set on white‐collar workers in Norway, for the years 1987‐1997. The estimation is carried out on two occupational groups: technical and administrative white‐collar workers.FindingsThe placing of workers in a given position within a firm's hierarchy is based on comparative advantage. Both measurable and unmeasurable skills are important. This hold…
Production Function Estimation in Stata Using the Ackerberg–Caves–Frazer Method
2016
We present a new e-class command, acfest, that implements the method of Ackerberg, Caves, and Frazer (2015, Econometrica 83: 2411–2451) to estimate production functions. This method deals with the functional dependence problems that may arise in the methods proposed by Olley and Pakes (1996, Econometrica 64: 1263–1297) and, particularly, Levinsohn and Petrin (2003, Review of Economic Studies 70: 317–341) (implemented in Stata by Yasar, Raciborski, and Poi [2008, Stata Journal 8: 221–231] and Petrin, Poi, and Levinsohn [2004, Stata Journal 4: 113–123], respectively). In particular, the acfest command yields (nonlinear, robust) generalized method of moments estimates using a Mata function an…
Full modal analysis of confocal coaxial elliptical waveguides
2000
An efficient method for analysing confocal coaxial elliptical waveguides is presented. Using elliptical coordinates, the differential Helmholtz equation is transformed into a linear matrix eigenvalue problem by means of the method of moments. The expressions of the vector mode functions for the full spectrum of these guides are constructed, including the TEM, TM and TE modes. The convergence of the method is very good, giving an efficient and accurate code. Comparisons with numerical results found in the technical literature validate the presented theory.
Numerical modelling of electromagnetic sources by integral formulation
2012
Analysis of electromagnetic (EM) transients can be carried out by employing a eld approach in frequency domain, based on an appropriate integral equation. This approach is a powerful method for the analysis of EM antennas and scatterers. Recent work by the authors in modeling electromagnetic scattering in frequency domain are summarized. Thin-wire electric eld integral equation has been handled and possible application in obtaining sources localization information are discussed. Moments method (MoM) is used and time domain analysis is also carried out by discrete Fourier transform. Di erent approaches have been considered by using direct MoM formulation. Simulation results obtained both via…
